Old French Embassy in Washington
Louis, Vicomte De Sartiges
A member of the French Aristocracy, Sartiges’ collection of coins was sold by Naville/Ars Classica in 1938 as the collection of a “Foreign Diplomat,” under the pseudonym Honorius. Sartiges’ collection of Greek and Roman coins had been published earlier in Paris by D.A. Longuet. Sartiges was ambassador to Riga, and later Secretary to the United States in Washington, D.C. Sartiges inherited important works of art from his wife’s family, such as a self-portrait by Rubens from Peiresc’s collection, but built his own remarkable collections of ancient coins and Japanese color prints.
