The Roman Aurei
Published in 2003, Xavier Calicó sprawling two-volume work attempted to catalogue every variety of Roman aureus. While the work does contain a number of errors, and occasionally illustrates coins using obverses and reverses borrowed from other types, drawings, or denarii, the work remains an incredible accomplishment, and the authoritative reference for Roman aurei. Many of the images of aurei in the work are taken from the plates of the Biaggi collection. Further images were contributed from or taken from catalogues published by leading houses such as Classical Numismatic Group, Numismatica Ars Classica, Numismatic Fine Arts.
